Rhyolite Bank Double Exposure, Rhyolite, Nevada, 2020
Rhyolite is a Nevada mining ghost town located just outside one of Death Valley National Park’s northern entrances, and is known for its haunting remnants of the early 1900s mining boom.
During a Death Valley artist residency, Cody Brothers visited Rhyolite, drawn by dramatic morning clouds. Using a 4×5 pinhole camera, he began a long exposure on the east corner of the old bank building, then moved to the west corner for a second shot. There, he forgot to flip the film holder, resulting in an unusual double exposure of a vertical and a horizontal image.
The result was a revelation, a ghostly merging of ethereal architecture and clouds. Brothers said what started as a mistake inspired him to explore double exposures and unconventional orientations, marking a new creative direction in his work.
