Ovens (Pano), Ely, Nevada, 2014

“Driving south of Ely, I spotted something unusual at the base of a mountain range—structures that looked like giant beehives. Curiosity got me, and so I detoured 20 miles down a dirt road and discovered these smelting ovens from the late 1800s Nevada silver rush.”

“Nevada is called the Silver State for a reason—silver mining shaped its early identity. These ovens, now part of a state historic park, once processed ore during that boom. Today, they sit quietly in the high desert, around 6,500–7,000 ft elevation, surrounded by abandoned ranches and natural beauty.”
