Fort Union Officers Quarters

Fort Union Officers Quarters
Fort Union National Monument, New Mexico, 2016

In 2016, Cody Brothers received the Imagine Your Parks grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. His objective was to photograph lesser-known national parks, including Fort Union National Monument and Pecos National Historical Park. Brothers turned his lens on Fort Union’s vast skies and endless horizons, two visual elements that made the nineteenth-century fort a strategic military post along the Santa Fe Trail.

Presented with carefully composed perspective, the fort’s shadowy chimneys stand in striking contrast to the luminous sky. Brothers captured these tranquil ruins at sunrise and sunset, thanks to special access permits from the National Park Service.
