Disappearing Train

Disappearing Train, Lamy, New Mexico, 2020

“The Lamy station is a longtime stop on the Amtrak train route from Chicago to LA. I had photographed trains there before from a spot I loved—but something was missing.”

“I was like, oh, no, it needs to be panoramic, and it needs to have the train tracks going away, train tracks coming at me, and it needs to almost have the curvature of that horizon.”

“So I studied the schedule, timed the train’s stop, and planned a nine-minute exposure using Ilford FP4 film with a handmade 4 x 10” Pinhole Panoramic camera and R25 filter to capture not just the train, but the clouds, the horizon, and the sweep of the tracks disappearing into the distance.”
