Brontos

Brontos, Holbrook, Arizona, 2024

On the return from celebrating his father’s 80th birthday near Phoenix, Cody Brothers detoured through Holbrook, a Route 66 town known for its roadside shops and towering dinosaur statues. Standing beneath these massive Brontosaurus figures—his head barely reaching the base of their necks—he waited for the perfect sky. Brothers said, “That day, the clouds were incredible. The way their necks aligned against that dramatic backdrop—I knew it would work.”

Shot with a lensless 8×10” pinhole camera and Red 29 filter, to Ilford FP4 film, this image marked a new direction in the artist’s work: creating contact prints from large-format negatives. According to Brothers, each print is unique, offering subtle variations that make every piece one-of-a-kind. He told the Booth, “I’ve only shown it once, as an 8×10 contact print on 11×14 paper. Now, I’m moving toward larger prints with edge detail”.
